TempurPedic History

TempurPedic- TempurPedic was the mattress company to lead the way with ‘Memory Foam’ mattresses, and is today one of, if not the best, known foam mattress companies in the world.

The TempurPedic Visco-elastic ‘memory foam’ mattress was developed from a product NASA invented and used in the early 1970’s to help cushion and support astronauts during lift off.  The material was a visco-ealstic foam material that was temperature and pressure sensitive and evenly distributed body weight.  NASA did some additional research and development on the product and eventually produced a more stable and commercially viable version.  This material was released to the general public in the 1980’s.

The product that NASA released to the public was acquired by a Swedish technical firm;  Fagerdala World foams.  Fagerdala, and it’s soon to be merging partner Dan-Foam of Denmark, spent nearly a decade perfecting the formula and when done, they named their version “Tempur”.  This accomplishment then leads to a commercially useful product and the first TempurPedic Swedish mattress in 1991.

In the early 1990’s, Fagerdala owner Dag Landvik and a VP at the company, Mikael Magnusson met Kentucky businessman Robert B Trussell, Jr.  According to the TempurPedic website, Trussell visited the Dan-Foam scientists in 1992 and, realizing the opportunity, founded Tempur-Pedic, Inc. to bring the mattress to North America.  An R and D and engineering site was built in Duffield, Virginia and another fabrication site was built in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In 1999, nine distributors of Fagerdala, including TempurPedic, Inc.  merged to form Tempur World holding company.  Tempur World was acquired in 2002 by the private equity firms TA Associates (Boston) and Friedman, Fleischer, & Lowe (SF).  Robert Trussell was retained as CEO and in that same year they reformed Tempur World holding company into TempurPedic International, Inc.   Tempur-Pedic International, Inc. went public in December 2003 and trades as TPX on the New York Stock Exchange.

Over the years, TempurPedic has expanded their line of products to include pillows, bedding, cushions and other accessories.  They have developed another foam product called Tempur HD that highly conforms to the sleepers body for even better pressure relief and also have Tempur ES, for unmatched ‘pillowy’ softness with unmatched support.
